Marlon Brando's portrayal of mob boss VITO CORLEONE in celluloid classic The Godfather has been voted the most memorable movie character in history.

The mafia don from Francis Ford Coppola's OSCAR-winning 1972 film beat Humphrey Bogart's role as FRED C DOBBS in the THE TREASURE OF SIERRA MADRE to the top spot.

Elsewhere in the poll - voted for by critics at America's PREMIERE magazine - SIR Sean Connery's take on James Bond came fifth, while SIGOURNEY WEAVER's ELLEN RIPLEY in ALIEN took eighth place.

Real-life characters were omitted from the vote.

A Premiere spokesperson explains, "We're giving priority to people who never were - but who are always with us movie lovers."
