LATEST: Late movie legend Marlon Brando was cremated in a private family ceremony in Los Angeles on Saturday (3JUL04), according to one of his closest friends.

The STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE star, who died aged 80 from lung failure, had reportedly left behind instructions to keep his funeral small and intimate.

Pal JAY KANTER - who knew Brando for over 50 years - told reporters "only family" attended but refused to comment on speculation Brando's ashes will be scattered over his private island in Tahiti.

Meanwhile, the GODFATHER star's lawyer DAVID SEELEY dismissed the idea of a memorial service for the actor, saying, "All I can tell you is...anything that's going to occur in the future is a private family matter."

He also denied reports Brando had requested his good friend and neighbour Jack Nicholson to lead the funeral service.

Seeley added: "None of that is true as far as I'm aware."
