Mark Wahlberg narrowly escaped death on the set of 'Lone Survivor'.

Director, Pete Berg claims he spent most of his time trying to prevent the actor whilst filming dangerous scenes in the war-epic, but almost ''lost'' him following a mishap with explosives.

He told ''I did blow him up, by accident .That was close. We almost lost Mark, for real.''

However this wasn't the only accident that occurred on the set of the war epic, as a stuntman was left with three broken ribs and a punctured lung after a failed attempt to jump off a cliff.

Berg recalled: ''I went up, I'm like, 'What are you going to do? And he said, 'Well, I'm going to run off this cliff, I'm going to leap off it, I'm going to hit that tree, I'm going to bounce off the tree, I'm going to hit a rock, and I'm going to bounce out.'''

Meanwhile Wahlberg admitted he was shocked by the lack of special effects used in the film, which involved physically demanding scenes in the mountains.

He laughed: ''I remember the first time I walked up on the rocks, I'm like, 'Dude, where's the wires? Where's the greenscreen?'''

'Lone Survivor' is based on a true story of Marcus Luttrell and the failed 2005 SEAL 10 Operations Red Wings mission, which led to the deaths of 19 men - its scheduled for release on January 10.
