War film Lone Survivor has marched to the top of the North American box office in its opening weekend (10-12Jan14).

The movie, which stars Mark Wahlberg, Taylor Kitsch and Emile Hirsch, and chronicles the real-life story of the lone survivor of a failed military operation in Afghanistan, raked in $38.5 million (Gbp24.1 million) to take the number one spot.

Disney's Frozen has fallen to the number two spot, taking in $15 million (Gbp9.4 million) and Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street brought in $9 million (Gbp5.6 million) to land at three.

Kellan Lutz's The Legend of Hercules and David O. Russell's American Hustle tied for the fourth spot with $8.6 million (Gbp5.7 million).
