The Coyote Ugly star hit headlines in 2013 when she went public with her sexuality in a moving Modern Love column for the New York Times, revealing she had started romancing her best friend, Clare Munn.

She went on to detail her "modern family" in her 2015 autobiography, Whatever... Love Is Love: Questioning the Labels We Give Ourselves, in which she discussed how she shares custody of her 15-year-old son Jackson with her ex-boyfriend, TV executive Dan MCDermott, who she split from in 2006 after seven years together.

However, Maria, 48, has since ended her relationship with Clare, and has now moved on to date 29-year-old Elijah Allan-Blitz, reports UsMagazine.com.

A source tells the publication the actress and the virtual reality director had been friends for a while before things turned romantic last August (15).

Maria has yet to comment on her new man, but she was pictured laughing with Elijah during a recent outing in Los Angeles.

The bisexual star has made a point not to label her sexual orientation since going gay, and in her New York Times piece, she revealed her son, then 12, made her realise she had no need to.

"I was with someone romantically and I hadn't told him," she recalled of 'coming out' to Jackson. "I had become involved with a woman who was my best friend, and, as it happens, a person who is like a godmother to my son."

After coming clean about her relationship with Clare, she was pleasantly surprised by how well her child had taken the news.

"He (Jackson) looked at me for what seemed like an eternity and then broke into a huge, warm smile," she wrote. "'Mom, love is love, whatever you are,' he said with wisdom beyond his years...

"I loved him so much for saying that. 'But Jack, I'm a little scared,' I said. 'When I was younger, people judged you if you were in a romantic relationship with a person of the same sex, and some still do. So I’m not sure how to deal with this. But we'll figure it out together."
