Mahershala Ali can't stop thinking about his baby daughter.

The 'Moonlight' actor and wife Amatus Sami-Karim welcomed Bari Najma into the world last month and the 43-year-old star is so besotted with the tot, she's even on his mind when he's asleep.

He said: ''I think about her even when I'm sleeping because I know she's laying there right with me so I have my hand on her making sure I don't roll on her.

''So I'm always conscious that she's near me even when I'm sleeping. It's a very present awareness that you have of the well being of this other person.''

Now awards season is over, Mahershala has been spending quality time with his wife and daughter and they are all ''doing good''.

He gushed to E! News: ''I'm just starting to get my equilibrium. The baby is sleeping well at night. She's full hands-on during the day. She likes to be held so she's a little hard to put down right now. We're doing good. It's nice that everything is settling down to some degree.

''She's super cute. I kiss her so much.''

And the Oscar-winning actor doesn't even mind getting his hands dirty and changing diapers.

He laughed: ''I'm pretty good. I'm not bad at it.''

Mahershala is fascinated by the way Bari changes every day.

He told People magazine: ''She was smiling last night [in her sleep]. It's just been great getting to know this little person whose body seems to change every day and whose awareness heightens every day. It's just been exciting.''

And the 'Hidden Figures' actor has a new ''focus'' now he is a father.

He explained: ''I think it changes your relationship with time. I just don't have time to waste.

''You gotta be really deliberate with how you choose to spend your day because those are the moments you're away from your child. If anything, I want to work in a more focused way and discover the right balance for my life.''
