Singers including Madonna and Cyndi Lauper have joined Hollywood stars James Franco, Edward Norton and Julianne Moore in supporting a new campaign for gay rights in Russia.

The stars have thrown their weight behind Uprising of Love, an organisation launched in New York City on Monday (09Dec13) to support the Lgbt (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) community in the former Soviet Union.

During the launch event, singer/songwriter Melissa Etheridge performed a new track called Uprising of Love, which she wrote after hearing of the troubles in Russia, where 'promoting' homosexuality has been deemed illegal.

Etheridge co-founded the scheme along with Hollywood screenwriter Dustin Lance Black and producer Bruce Cohen.

Other supporters of the campaign include Jim Parsons, Carrie Fisher, George Takei and Sigourney Weaver.
