Madonna has claimed her sixth number one album in America after dancing straight to the top of the Billboard charts.

Her new release, CONFESSIONS ON A DANCEFLOOR became the third successive Madonna album to debut at the top of the charts, selling 350,000 in its first week.

American Idol champ Carrie Underwood's debut, SOME HEARTS, entered the new chart at number two with a healthy 315,000 copies sold.

Underwood's album has also topped the new US Country Albums chart - the first time an American Idol contestant has made it to the top.

Meanwhile, fellow country star Kenny Chesney's THE ROAD + THE RADIO slipped from the top to number three on the national chart while the reissued platinum edition of Mariah Carey's The Emancipation Of Mimi helped the album shoot back up the charts from 15 to number four. The fifth spot on the new Billboard chart is held by compilation album NOW! THAT'S WHAT I CALL MUSIC VOL. 20.

Elsewhere in the top 10, country duo BIG + RICH debut at number seven with COMIN' TO YOUR CITY and GREEN DAY'S BULLET IN A BIBLE CD/DVD package enters at number eight.
