Madonna has beaten Lionel Richie to the number one spot on the US Billboard album chart.

The 53-year-old singer - who is widely known as the Queen of Pop - surged to the summit with her new record 'MDNA', which sold 359,000 copies in its first week meaning it's the eighth time the blonde star has topped the Billboard 200 album chart.

Lionel's country record 'Tuskegee' - his 10th studio album - sold 199,000 copies in its debut week and reached number two.

The album's position was No Doubt boosted by the 62-year-old music legend's one-hour long concert special on the Home Shopping Network channel two weeks ago, which led to 20,000 copies being sold, and the record's line up of stars including Blake Shelton, Shania Twain, Jason Aldean and Willie Nelson.

Despite being beaten to the top by Madonna, 'Tuskegee' is Lionel's highest charting album since 1986 when his 'Dancing on the Ceiling' record reached number one.
