Napoleon began his career in the 1940s, performing in an orchestra fronted by the Marx Brothers' Chico Marx, before forming a quartet with drummer Buddy Rich, bassist Chubby Jackson and saxophonist Charlie Ventura.

He was perhaps best known for his work with jazz great Louis Armstrong, playing with his All Stars band on and off from 1952 until the Wonderful World star's death in 1971.

Napoleon also went on to play with the likes of Nat King Cole, Gene Krupa and Coleman Hawkins.
