Hit new shows Lost and Desperate Housewives were the big winners at the Television Critics Associations Awards in Los Angeles last night (23JUL05).

Desert island drama Lost beat the Housewives, HOUSE, RESCUE ME and VERONICA MARS to pick up Outstanding New Program trophy, as well as Outstanding Achievement in Drama, at the star-studded ceremony in the Beverly Hilton hotel, which was hosted by Scots funnyman Craig Ferguson.

Desperate Housewives creator MARC CHERRY was ecstatic when his drama was named Program Of The Year, saying, "A lot of writers in Hollywood go around and they say, 'Oh, I don't care what the critics say, I don't care about critics.' I must tell you now, I care desperately what you guys say. It matters to me greatly."

The team behind were Arrested Development were delighted with their Outstanding Achievement In Comedy gong, after the comedy narrowly avoided being cancelled by the Fox network after falling ratings earlier this year (05).

Comedian Bob Newhart was also honoured with a lifetime achievement accolade.
