American TV show Lost almost failed to be aired in Britain following a series of real-life airplane disasters.
Channel 4 bosses were reluctant to air the hit drama which follows the fortunes of 48 air crash survivors - due to the recent plane crashes in Greece, Venezuela and Toronto, Canada.
In defence of their decision to air the program, a Channel 4 spokesperson says, "It is a fanciful drama that tends to concentrate more on how strangers on an island get to know each other.
"It was felt that the vast amount of material was suitably removed.
"Whenever there are world events that have any kind of parallels, we take it seriously and look closely on a case-by-case basis."
