Lord Of The Rings actor Andy Serkis loathes doing press interviews in countries where his character is dubbed into another language - because nobody knows who he is.

Serkis provides the voice and movement for animated creature Gollum, whom he has given a distinctive rasping sound - but for non-English speaking audiences another actor has provided the vocals.

Serkis laments, "For the first six months of next year I'll be doing junkets solidly. It can get a bit soul-sapping.

"Worst of all are Italy and Spain, where most people watch a dubbed version of the film. Not only does nobody recognise me, but over there the dubbed Gollum doesn't even hiss - it's just a guy with a regular voice.

"So when I do the voice for their benefit, they just stare at me blankly like I'm absolutely mad."
