Troubled actress Lindsay Lohan has been arrested on drink and drugs charges, less than a fortnight after leaving rehab.

In her second bRush with the law this month, the 21-year-old star was detained for driving under the influence of alcohol after police in Santa Monica, California received a report in the early hours of Tuesday morning that two cars were chasing each other in the area.

Detectives have revealed that Lohan was found driving a white GMC Yukon, which was apparently pursuing a car being driven by the mother of her personal assistant, in a parking lot.

It is not clear why the star was appeared to be chasing the second vehicle, but at a subsequent press conference police revealed that her assistant had quit her job just hours before.

"While conducting a preliminary investigation at the scene, officers smelled alcohol on Lindsay Lohan's breath," Santa Monica police explained in a statement detailing the circumstances of her arrest.

"Lohan failed a sobriety exam administered by the officers," the statement continued.

After being arrested the actress underwent a breath test which showed her blood-alcohol level to be
between 0.12 and 0.13 per cent, above the Californian legal limit of 0.8 per cent.

Police also found a small amount of cocaine in Lohan's pocket while booking her.

She was subsequently charged with driving under the influence, possession of a controlled substance and for driving on a suspended licence.

The actress was released on bail set at $25,000 (£12,000).

Lohan's arrest comes after the star handed herself in to Beverly Hills police on Friday to face charges of drink driving and leaving the scene of an accident in relation to a car crash on May 26th, when she allegedly lost control of her Mercedes-Benz sports car and drove into a hedge.

Hollywood commentators are debating what impact Lohan's latest behaviour will have on her career, with the actress having checked out of a rehab centre just this month wearing an alcohol-monitoring bracelet.

The star's planned appearance on Jay Leno's chat show last night, when she was due to promote her new movie - I Know Who Killed Me, was scrapped.

Meanwhile shooting on Lohan's next film, Poor Things, has reportedly been delayed since late May due to problems arising from the actress' off-screen antics.
