Actress And Songwriter Linda Thompson Has Penned An Op-ed Urging Fans Not To Pass Judgement On Her Ex-husband Bruce Jenner As He Transitions From Male To Female, Insisting It's "Impossible" To "Fully Grasp" The "Imprisonment" He Has Felt For His Entire Life.
The former Olympian went public with his lifelong gender identity crisis in a candid interview with newswoman Diane Sawyer, which aired in the U.S. on Friday (24Apr15), and during the chat, he revealed he has started hormone therapy to physically transform into a woman after previously abandoning similar plans in the 1980s.
Now his second ex-wife Thompson has opened up about how she came to terms with his transgender confession, which ultimately ended their three-year marriage in 1984.
In the article for the Huffington Post, Thompson claims Jenner was "pretty much the perfect specimen of a man", so she was shocked when the retired athlete came clean about his cross-dressing tendencies and she battled to find ways to "fix" his troubles, even attending counselling sessions with a gender dysphoria therapist.
She recalls, "Bruce lamented, 'I have lived in the wrong skin, the wrong body, my whole life. It is a living hell for me, and I really feel that I would like to move forward with the process of becoming a woman, the woman I have always been inside.'
"I was pretty ignorant of the fact that being transgender isn't something that can be overcome, fixed, prayed away, exorcised or obliterated by any other arcane notion."
The couple called it quits six months later, but Thompson, mother to Jenner's two sons Brandon and Brody, is glad her ex is finally living the life he has always dreamed of and she wants others to embrace his new lifestyle just as his entire family has.
She concludes, "It's impossible for those of us who are comfortable living in our own skin to fully grasp what an imprisonment that must feel like to be born into the wrong body...
"Bruce has already 'gone through the fire'... it is certainly not our place to judge him or others who may feel trapped, ostracized, or alone."
Meanwhile, his third ex-wife, Kardashian family matriarch Kris Jenner, has broken her silence about the sportsman's transition news, taking to Twitter to write, "Not only was I able to call him my husband for 25 years and father of my children, I am now able to call him my hero."
The Jenners, parents to daughters Kendall and Kylie, split in 2013 and their divorce was finalised in December (14).
