Singer Lily Allen and gossip writer Perez Hilton engaged in a war of words earlier this week - via blogging website Twitter.

The social networking site - whose popular posters include Stephen Fry, Jonathan Ross and Barack Obama - allows users to regularly write 140-character status updates, or 'tweets'.

While most users post pictures, articles or simply describe their mood, Allen and Hilton took to feuding about the singer's album sales and which of the pair was more obsessed with the other.

After Hilton wrote that the Smile star was casting for her new music video and he was keen on a part, Allen sniped: "Oh, I'm sorry, we've already cast the jealous and bitter lonely old queen role. Next time, eh?"

Hilton replied: "Jealous of who? David Beckham, maybe. And if I wanted to be a f****d up Brit, I'd rather be Amy Winehouse — whose [sic] got talent."

The pair both claimed the other was "obsessed" with the other before Hilton took aim at sales of Allen's new album, It's Not Me, It's You.

"Congrats on your album doing well in America, though," he wrote. "It's REALLY HARD to sell copies when u discount it to $3.99. Desperate."

"It's also #1 everywhere else in the world, douchebag," Allen replied. "Go away you little parasite."

Hilton then joked that he loved Allen as she too was a "big fat c**t" before commenting about adverts for Allen's album featured on his own gossip site.

"I'll take your money (or the label's) anytime!" he added.

"I know you will, and that's what makes you a cheap ass w***e," Allen responded. "Now leave me alone, stop following me, I'm working."

Allen has since blocked Hilton while her album has since charted at number five in the US, a career-high chart placing that Allen called "not too shabby".
