Liam Neeson's new thriller Taken 2 has scared off Hotel Transylvania to hold onto the top spot at the U.K. box office for a second week in a row.

The sequel to 2008's Taken fought off competition from the animated comedy to remain Britain's best-selling movie with earnings of $5.9 million (£3.7 million).

Monster movie Hotel Transylvania, which features the voices of Adam Sandler and Selena Gomez, came in second with opening week takings of $2.7 million (£1.7 million), ahead of Ethan Hawke's new horror film, Sinister, with $2.08 million (£1.3 million).

The top five is rounded out by sci-fi thriller Looper in fourth ($1.9 million/£1.2 million) and Emma Watson's The Perks of Being a Wallflower at five ($636,800/£398,000).
