Frontiersmen, which will centre upon pioneers like Daniel Boone, Lewis & Clark, Tecumseh, Davy Crockett, and Andrew Jackson, will be developed under The Revenant star's Appian Way Productions company.

The eight-part series will span 75 years of American history, between the Revolutionary War and the California Gold Rush. The documentary series will air on U.S. network History.

"During these years, America went from the opportunity of land to the land of opportunity and it was a bloody struggle throughout," History channel head of programming Paul Cabana says. "From Crockett to Boone, we'll tell the bold stories of these adventurous trailblazers who explored the uncharted wilderness and became the icons we know today."
