Gossip about a particularly nasty scene in the new film began circulating online earlier this month (Dec15) after an article published on The Drudge Report suggested the drama features "a shocking scene of a wild bear raping Leo DiCaprio".

The bizarre story was so widely circulated, it prompted movie bosses at the studio behind the film to deny the rumours, saying, "There is clearly no rape scene with a bear."

The bear rape claims were reported to Leonardo at the film's premiere in Los Angeles on Wednesday night (16Dec15), and the actor admitted he had no clue how such an odd story came about.

"I have no idea where these ridiculous things come from, and what you do when you hear stuff like that," he told E! News. "It's absurd. It's absurd."

In the thriller, the latest movie from Oscar-winning director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, Leonardo plays legendary frontiersman Hugh Glass who plots revenge on his fellow travellers after they leave him for dead following a brutal bear attack.

During the shoot, Leonardo ate bison liver for one particularly grisly scene.

"It's something that I won't repeat, that's for sure," he added. "We submerged ourselves in the elements for this film. We really wanted to create something incredibly authentic so these types of adventures lend themselves to taking chances like that.

"You want to be as authentic as you possibly can with every decision that you make and that resulted in me biting into something that was pretty disgusting and my real reaction is on film and up there onscreen."
