British author Jim Grant, who has churned out the action-adventure Jack Reacher novels under the pen name Lee Grant, has defended the casting of Tom Cruise in the role of Reacher in the first movie based on his series. Much of the criticism has to do with the fact that Cruise looks very little like the way the Reacher character is described in the books. In particular, Reacher is 6'5" tall, while Cruise is nearly a foot shorter, at 5'7". "Reacher's size in the books is a metaphor for an unstoppable force, which Cruise portrays in his own way," Grant/Child told Australia's The Age newspaper. But on a Facebook page itled "Tom Cruise is not Jack Reacher," one writer commented, "Lee Child must payback all the readers who supported him over the years by purchasing/reading his books, however sadly it seems he sold out." Another wrote "A HUGE mistake casting TC as Jack. He is nothing like Reacher. I was looking forward to seeing one of Lee's books turned into a movie but not with this actor playing the lead. What a disappointment."
