The Empire co-creator and showrunner has been linked to direct the movie since 2014. However, he has since parted ways with studio bosses at The Weinstein Company, according to Deadline.

The site reports the departure was a result of Daniels' busy schedule. In addition to his duties at the hit hip-hop drama, the TV and movie mogul is also busy with a new music drama called Stars, which features Queen Latifah and centres on the rise of an all-female singing group.

Daniels directed the show's pilot and also serves as an executive producer on Stars.

As for the Pryor film, which details the legendary comedian's life and career, the hunt for a new director is currently on, and production is still expected to begin in October (16).

Funnyman Mike Epps will star as Pryor, along with Kate Hudson as the late comedian's wife. Oprah Winfrey and Jennifer Hudson are also on board.
