The hip-hop veteran has teamed up with Wonderboy Entertainment boss Rasheed Rahan Wonder and songwriter Unique Mecca Hall for the lawsuit, which accuses TV executives of illegally sampling Fresh's 1993 track I-Ight (Alright) in the song No Doubt About It, reports AllHipHop.com.

The popular party chant "Ayo, Aight (sic)", created by Hall, is the line at the centre of their complaint.

The new tune was produced for Empire by Timbaland, who previously served as the series' musical director, and was performed by main castmember Jussie Smollett alongside rapper Pitbull in the third episode of season two, which aired in the U.S. last year (15). It also featured on the show's official soundtrack.

It's not clear exactly who has been named in the legal papers, but Daniels created Empire and executive produces the show.

Wonder is taking the legal action on behalf of Hall, who is currently serving time behind bars.
