The Born This Way singer has emerged as the top choice to star opposite Bradley Cooper in the film, which will also mark the actor's directorial debut.

Reports of the pop star's involvement in the project surfaced in April (16), when Gaga was photographed hitching a ride on Cooper's motorcycle on their way to a dinner date in Los Angeles.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gaga tested for Warner Bros. bosses and her audition impressed executives, giving her the edge over other potentials stars.

The classic movie, which was first released in 1937, revolves around a wannabe singer who moves to Hollywood and is discovered by an alcoholic and troubled actor. Judy Garland played the part in 1954, and Barbra Streisand took on the role in 1976.

Warner Bros. chiefs have been working on a remake for years, with Cooper's American Sniper director Clint Eastwood attached to take charge of the film since 2011. Eastwood moved on to direct the film adaptation of hit musical Jersey Boys when the project stalled.

Beyonce was originally rumoured to be taking the lead role in A Star Is Born, but those talks also fell through, after the superstar fell pregnant with daughter Blue Ivy.

If Gaga does sign on for A Star Is Born, it will mark her first leading role in a film. Earlier this year (16), she won her first Golden Globe for her role in American Horror Story: Hotel and she also picked up an Oscar nomination for co-writing the original song from the documentary The Hunting Ground.
