Following the surprise success of 'Snow White and the Huntsman' at last week's box office, attention now turns to the battle between two movies that couldn't be any different. The Kristen Stewart adventure movie is expected to slip down to No.3, with Ridley Scott's 'Prometheus' and the animated flick 'Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted' ready to duke it out for the top spot this weekend.
Though Madagascar will likely pull in the family crowds, anticipation is high for 'Prometheus', especially to those who hold 'Alien' in high regard. Entertainment Weekly predict that Scott's sci-fi movie will take around $56 million on debut, to see it top of the box-office. They refer to Inception's $62 million opening in July 2010 as a guide to how Prometheus may fare. That means 'Madagascar 3' would open to around $48 million, to see it comfortably take second place. 'Snow White and the Huntsman' is expected to take a further $26 million, taking its total gross to over $100 million, while 'Men in Black 3' will take an extra $13 million. Joss Whedon's huge grossing 'Avengers' film - which has taken over $1 billion worldwide - should top up its total with a further $12 million.
BoxOffice.com editor Phil Contrino predicts a closer box-office battle, with 'Prometheus' taking $51 million, and 'Madagascar 3' taking $49 million. He added, "Which is our way of saying it's a coin flip. We're giving the slight edge to 'Prometheus".
