The family of late British singer Kirsty Maccoll are celebrating after authorities agreed to launch an inquiry into the star's death in a speedboat accident in Mexico five years ago (00).
MacColl's mother Jean, 82, is thrilled with the breakthrough, which comes after endless meetings with government officials in Mexico, where MacColl was tragically killed while swimming with her children in 2000.
The case may lead to supermarket mogul GUILLERMO GONZALEZ NOVA, the owner of the boat, being prosecuted. The Mexican tycoon was sentenced to two years and 10 months for wrongful killing, but has subsequently bought his way out of prison.
Jean MacColl, who heads the Justice For Kirsty campaign, says, "It has been a very long struggle but we are very pleased that the authorities have finally agreed to re-open the case.
"We still want justice for Kirsty and I won't give up until we get it."
