Kim Basinger relaxed her parenting methods following her divorce from Alec Baldwin because she wanted the couple's daughter Ireland to have a happy childhood.
The former couple split in 2002 after nine years of marriage. Ireland was seven-years-old at the time and Kim explains her main focus was to protect her daughter from the negativity surrounding the divorce.
"Divorce is hard on a kid, no matter how you cut it and ours was very public and nasty," she tells The Edit by Net-A-Porter. "So I brought up Ireland in a very unconventional way."
"I just wanted her to be free. If she wanted to have her friends over and write over the walls with pen, that was fine. I wanted her childhood to be full of love and light and animals and friends."
Following the split, Alec and Kim engaged in a four-year custody battle, but they have since repaired their relationship.
"(Alec and I are) cool now, though," she continues. "Life goes on."
Alec has since moved on with his wife Hilaria, who is expecting their third child, and Kim is in a relationship with hairstylist Mitch Stone.
"I think it's possible to date someone when you're 20 and end up with them when you're 55," she adds. "Anything is possible. But my taste in men has changed a lot over the years. When you're young you're attracted to the bad boy, only to find out that they're actually just bullies or insecure - you're attracted to fantasies."
"Now, I'm more reality-based," she continues. "As a sexual creature I've been attracted to a lot of different types, people that others have thought were unattractive.
"But showing kindness and humour are the most important things to me now. If you have those qualities then I think that makes you attractive."
