The 28-year-old star is one of a number of big names in the running to replace Steve Jones as the host of the pop star search show, including Kelly Osbourne, Mario Lopez and Stacy Keibler, with boss Simon Cowell keen to have one man and one woman take on the job.
A source told E! News: ''They're doing the auditions without a host so it's no big deal they don't have hosts right now.
''Simon really wants to take his time. The two person thing didn't work out the first time and he wants to make sure it works this time.''
Paula recently revealed she was still friends with Simon despite leaving the show after just one season.
Speaking at the White Nights of St Petersburg Festival in Russia over the weekend, where Paula acted as a singing contest judge, she told BANG Showbiz: ''Believe it or not, Simon and I are friends. It's a warped kind of thing.
''He was stuck between a rock and a hard place when he opened up his mouth. He thought changes and a bold and a big departure were needed for what was going on.''
