Kevin Costner and British actor Eddie Redmayne have a bizarre connection - they've both spent quality time with physicist Stephen Hawking.

Costner met up with Redmayne at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday (25Jan15) and they reunited backstage at chat show Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Tuesday (27Jan15).

The Dances With Wolves Oscar winner told the young star they shared a link to Hawking, who Redmayne portrays in new film The Theory of Everything.

He says, "I walked in to say something to him... I said, 'Congratulations..., I met Stephen Hawking'.

"About 12 or 15 years ago I got a call and (the person) said, 'Stephen Hawking would like to come and meet you,' so I said, 'Ok'. So he came in a van with an entourage of 10 people... There were nurses and people with long hair from the Netherlands, and they were going to go dancing that night, but he wanted to meet me.

"He came to the house. I actually had my three kids... and I said, 'I want you to meet this man'. I didn't really know a lot about him; I'm a public school guy...

"I was obviously taken aback that he was in that wheelchair and wasn't able to move. I got him a drink and most of it ended up on the floor and I saw my children just a little bit shocked and I said, 'Look, if you wanna go finish your homework you can do that', and of course they peeled off because I thought, 'This isn't gonna work for them'."

Baffled as to why a genius would want to hang out with him, Costner finally asked his guest why he was there.

The actor recalls, "He said, 'I'd like to know about Whitney Houston... I said, 'You're not the only one, Steve, a lot of people wanna know about Whitney...' and that was it, they got in their van and took off."

Costner worked with Houston on the film The Bodyguard.
