Kerry Washington uses fashion as a ''creative outlet''.

Despite being assisted by her stylist Erin Walsh, the 'Django Unchained' actress insists she always picks her own outfits for glitzy events as she enjoys the freedom of wearing an ensemble she feels relaxed in.

She told People magazine: ''I work very closely with my stylist. She and I are a team.

''It's a creative outlet for me. I don't choose to wear anything that I'm going to be uncomfortable in and I don't dress for other people's opinions. I dress for my own opinions.''

Kerry admits there are ''too many'' looks she has pulled off to pick a particular favourite, but believes she will one day find an outfit which stands out from the others.

She added: ''Give me time. I'm sure I will [have one].''

The 36-year-old beauty is no stranger to experimenting with her style. She most recently made a statement in a low-cut Vera Wang gown, set off with long leather gloves and purple streaks in her hair at the Met Ball in New York, following the Costume Institute Gala's 'Punk: Chaos to Couture' theme.

Speaking on the red carpet at the event, she said: ''In honour of Vera's design I put all these purple highlights in my hair to have a punk moment. I've never done anything like this before in my life!''
