Nights And Weekends Review

Extraordinary
If you prefer independent film -- real, do-it-yourself, independent film -- there's still hope in today's mega-budget world: a movement fondly called Mumblecore (see Funny Ha Ha, Mutual Appreciation). It's minimalist laid-back filmmaking full of revealing conversation, usually between twentysomethings rooting through their relationships and lives. Mumblecore standouts Joe Swanberg and Greta Gerwig follow last year's Hannah Takes the Stairs by co-writing, co-directing, and starring in this fascinating step in the movement's evolution.

Nights and Weekends removes practically all surrounding environment for its characters except two giant constructs: distance and time. Swanberg and Gerwig play James and Mattie, a young couple trying to make their romance work though he lives in Chicago, she in New York. Our introduction to this pair is remarkably efficient: With a single, fixed shot, James and Mattie enter an apartment and, without getting five feet past the door, breathlessly remove each other's clothing, small suitcase in the corner. No dialogue, but we get it.

Dropping Out Review

Essential
Emile (Kent Osborne) is a pretty humble guy. He just wants one simple thing out of his life: for it to be just as picture-perfect as the TV. The opiate of the masses known as television is Emile's drug of choice as he wanders through the world of the nicotine-stained San Fernando Valley. Everything is, as in the television, just fine and dandy until one day a squirrel lands on Emile's cable, disconnecting it. So, confronted with an absolute dearth of television reception, Emile decides to slit his wrists.

From there on in, we enter into one of the funniest and most meaningful dark comedies since Happiness. You see; Emile's suicide attempt is interrupted by a call from the manager of a hotel, at which Emile begins to work the night shift. One night, after the local supermarket is out of chicken potpies, Emile announces to Henry (David Koechner), his co-worker, that he wants to commit suicide. He also requests that Henry will send the tape to Emile's ex-girlfriend and clean up after the act.

The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie Review

Excellent
If you've never seen the Nickelodeon show SpongeBob SquarePants, you're probably wondering why you'd ever want to see a kiddie movie based on a kiddie network's TV show. But if you're curious enough about the SpongeBob hype to read this review, please allow me sell you on the virtues of this often clever and very funny movie based on an equally sharp and hip animated series.

For the uninitiated, SpongeBob (Tom Kenny) is a yellow sponge clothed in square pants that "lives in a pineapple under the sea," as the song states, in the middle of a town of fish, crabs, and other sea life called Bikini Bottom. In this 90-minute outing, our hero is glum that he's been passed over for the job of his dreams - manager of the new Krusty Krab 2 - because he's "just a kid." But he can't stay sad for long; the evil Plankton (Mr. Lawrence) has launched "Plan Z," which frames SB's boss Mr. Krab for the theft of King Neptune's (Jeffrey Tambor) crown.
