Game of Thrones star Richard Madden had to abandon the role of the star-crossed lover in Romeo & Juliet after injuring his leg, and now his understudy Tom Hanson has also been forced to step down.

Pride and Victor Frankenstein actor Freddie Fox has stepped in to fill the void and he will join the cast of the Garrick Theatre play on Tuesday (26Jul16).

Announcing the latest casting news, Branagh says, "Sometimes things do not go according to plan in the theatre. Who would have predicted both Richard and Tom would sustain such unexpected injuries.

"Our job is to help make sure they both make the best recovery possible, whilst working as hard as we can to provide a great show for audiences."

Fox recently played Romeo at Sheffield, England's Crucible Theatre.

Madden, who is hoping to rejoin the cast as soon as possible, has told fans it's "hugely frustrating and sad" not to be able to perform, adding that both Hanson and Fox deserve "a big thank you" for stepping in.

The production, which also stars Madden's girlfriend Lily James as Juliet and Sir Derek Jacobi and Meera Syal, runs until 13 August (16).
