She replaces Ken Howard, who died last month (23Mar16).

Carteris, the organisation's former executive vice president, assumed Howard's duties following his death.

She will now serve the balance of her predecessor's term, which expires in 2017, after winning a historic national board vote.

"I am deeply honoured to be chosen by the SAG-AFTRA national board to serve the union and its members as president," said Carteris. "Ken was a great union leader, friend and mentor. He left big shoes to fill, but with the support of the national board of directors and the membership, I am committed to improving the lives of all SAG-AFTRA members."

Voiceover actress Rebecca Damon was voted to serve as executive vice president.
