The 25-year-old actor, who plays Darius alongside Donald Glover in the TV comedy, took to the stage wearing a captain's hat after Atlanta lost out to Silicon Valley for the Best Comedy Series prize during the ceremony at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California.

As Silicon Valley's producer Tom Lassally began to walk to presenters Leslie Mann and Christian Slater to accept his award, Stanfield made a quick dash and got to the microphone first.

"I wanna thank everybody for honouring us in this way," he said, pretending he was part of that show. "We worked really hard on Silicon Valley, and here we are. Thank you."

After he walked away, the presenters laughed off the interruption and allowed Lassally, who had waited behind Stanfield on the stage, to finally give his speech. He admitted he was thrown by the incident, by telling the audience, "(I have) no idea who that was."

He joked, "Unfortunately (executive producer) Alec Berg was sick tonight, so (Stanfield) and I are both substitutions."

Stanfield is best known for playing Snoop Dogg in 2015 N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton, as well as starring in Selma, The Purge: Anarchy, Dope and Short Term 12.

Atlanta may not have won the series prize, but Glover took home the Best Actor in a Comedy Series for his role in the show.
