Legendary actress Katherine Hepburn has died - she was 96.

The OSCAR-winning screen goddess passed away peacefully at the Connecticut home in which she was born in 1907, surrounded by family and friends on Sunday afternoon (29JUN03).

The AFRICAN QUEEN star had become increasingly frail in recent years after suffering from Parkinson's Disease and related health problems.

Hepburn was one of the greatest actresses ever to grace the silver screen. She was nominated for an incredible 12 Oscars and won four, for her performances in MORNING GLORY, GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER, The Lion in Winter and ON GOLDEN Pond.

Although she was a reluctant star - who became a virtual recluse in her last years - Hepburn's private life won her even more attention. Her relationship with volatile screen legend Spencer Tracy, with whom she made nine films, generated a media frenzy and lasted 27 years - until his death in 1967.

Highlights of her illustrious career include performances in THE PHILADELPHIA STORY, Bringing Up Baby and ADAM'S RIB.
