Late screen legend Katharine Hepburn's possessions have been sold for $5.8 million (GBP3.3 million) over the course of a two-day auction - exceeding organisers' predictions.

Items belonging to the ACADEMY AWARD winner - including paintings, clothing, photographs and furniture - were sold at New York's SOTHEBY'S, with all monies raised being placed into trust for Hepburn's family.

Among the 695 items snapped up was a small bronze busy of actor SPENCER TRACY, which sold for $316,000 (GBP180,000) - way over the estimated $4,000 (GBP2,900).

Sotheby's LEILA DUNBAR says, "We are absolutely thrilled with the results achieved for Miss Hepburn's estate - a testament to her enduring legacy.

"It was her wish to give the public a chance to own something of hers.

"And the immense power of her celebrity and worldwide appeal had a significant impact on the bidding, driving prices to many multiples of their estimates."

Hepburn died last June (03) aged 96.
