Karl Lagerfeld has appeared in an advertisement for Volkswagen cars.

The CHANEL creative director has played up his fashion credentials in the ad for the new add-on package named Style, for the Golf and Polo models of the German car manufacturer.

In the tongue-in-cheek commercials Karl discovers The Cars have alloy wheel rims and tinted "privacy" windows - because he says fashion people don't like bright light.

The flamboyant designer appears with his Muse Baptiste Giabiconi - who recently branched out from modelling into pop music - in the 30 second video, with Baptiste pointing out the stylish cars are German like Lagerfeld himself rather than French.

Karl has a number of design interests outside of his role at Chanel, most recently announcing he is to design a capsule collection for Macy's.

He will create a one-off limited edition women's line, which will be sold in about 250 Macy's stores as well as online from next September.

Terry J. Lundgren, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Macy's Inc, said: "Karl Lagerfeld holds a unique place in the world of fashion, an icon who is the ultimate modernist. Through the decades, his style and vision have marked the history of design. It is a tremendous honour to bring his inimitable perspective to our fashion customer."

The collection is part of a new initiative at Macy's in which a host of designers will create capsule collections for the store's Impulse department.
