The film features an all-star cast, including Justin Timberlake, Anna Kendrick and Gwen Stefani, as animated versions of the popular Trolls toys, and earned $6.63 million (£5.44 million) on its debut in British cinemas last weekend (21-23Oct16).

Second was Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, with Tom Cruise's second outing as the titular military policeman-turned-vigilante bringing in $3.28 million (£2.69 million) in ticket sales on its opening weekend.

Emily Blunt fronted thriller The Girl on the Train fell from first last weekend (14-16Oct16) to third with takings of $2.44 million (£2 million).

In fourth was the third adaptation of Dan Brown's conspiracy novels, Inferno, while the autumn's biggest British hit, Bridget Jones's Baby held on to the final place in the box office top five.
