Closer stars Julia Roberts and Clive Owen are to reunite for upcoming drama Duplicity, directed by Michael Clayton helmer Tony Gilroy, it has emerged.

The Universal Pictures film has the feel of a mature Mr and Mrs Smith meets Hustle, telling the tale of long-time lovers who work as spies for rival companies, according to Variety.

The corporate crime caper sees Roberts and Owen teaming up to embark on an elaborate plan to rip off the big business world by stealing a valuable product.

Gilroy penned all three Bourne films for Universal and will sit in the director's chair for the second time on Duplicity, after his well-received George Clooney-starring debut, while Owen's new film Elizabeth - The Golden Age, in which he plays the rakish Sir Walter Raleigh, hits UK screens on Friday November 2nd.

The Croupier actor is currently filming upcoming Tom Tykwer thriller The International opposite Naomi Watts while pre-production on comic book sequel Sin City 2 is to begin soon.

Oscar-winner Roberts, meanwhile, will next be seen working for Closer director Mike Nichols again alongside Tom Hanks and Philip Seymour Hoffman in Charlie Wilson's War.
