The dress worn by Judy Garland in 'The Wizard of Oz' is going up for auction next month.

The piece - a blue and white gingham design with puff capped sleeves - will go on sale at Julien's Auctions in California at a staring price of $200,000, although it is expected it could rise to as much as $500,000 on the day.

Although several of the costumes were made for Judy - the mother of Liza Minnelli - for the 1939 film, only one complete original has survived.

It is being sold as part of the Icons and Idols 2012: Hollywood sale, and is currently on display at the Stafford Hotel in central London before it will be exhibited at the auction house in Beverly Hills from November 5-9.

Meanwhile, the Victoria and Albert museum in London is set to host the original surplus dress for the movie in its Hollywood Costume exhibition, which will also feature the ruby red shoes worn by Judy on display for the first time outside of the US.
