Balladeer Joseph Brooks has died from an apparent suicide.
The songwriter, who penned the hit You Light Up My Life, was found dead at his home in New York on Sunday (22May11).
A friend discovered the 73 year old near a helium tank with a tube attached to a dry cleaning bag and a towel wrapped around his head and neck, police tell CNN.
He had left a suicide note.
His legacy as a hitmaker was ruined two years ago when he charged of raping 11 women, according to the New York Daily News.
Brooks, who pleaded not guilty to predatory sexual assault, allegedly invited the women to his New York City apartment after they answered his online advertisements for acting auditions.
A trial date has not yet been set.
Meanwhile, Brooks' son Nicholas has also been embroiled in scandal, pleading not guilty to a second-degree murder charge following the death of his fashion designer girlfriend at a New York hotel.
The songwriter's biggest hit was recorded by Debbie Boone.
