Former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr has entered the American album charts at number one with the band Modest Mouse.
Marr, who only joined the popular US band after they advertised for a 'Johnny Marr-sounding guitarist', has now netted his first number one stateside despite his huge success in the UK with Morrissey as part of The Smiths.
The album, We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank, topped the Billboard Chart in its first week and is also currently number one in the iTunes Download Chart and the Amazon Chart.
Johnny told jmarr.com: "It's great news, I knew we had written some really good songs and when we started recording I felt it was going to be a great record.
"I really am enjoying playing the live shows. The songs have been going down so well even though people haven't heard them before. We're all very happy and looking forward to touring the world."
Washington-based Modest Mouse have been going since the early 1990s based around singer/lyricist/guitarist Isaac Brock, with members coming and going.
Marr joined last year and is now a permanent fixture in the band who are set to visit Europe and the UK this summer after their successful US roadshow.
The Smiths were one of the seminal British bands of the 1980s and have attracted lasting critical and cult acclaim.
