Items belonging to late country star Johnny Cash raised $1.24 million (GBP692,000) yesterday (14SEP04) on the first day of an auction in New York - 15 times what experts predicted.
A custom-made acoustic guitar, valued at $20,000 (GBP11,650), sold for $131,200 (GBP73,200). Other items to fetch more than expected include a photo of Elvis Presley inscribed 'June, I love you' (referring to his late wife JUNE Carter Cash), which sold for $18,000 (GBP10,000) and pair of silver Tiffany centrepieces which made GBP42,000 (GBP23,300).
Auction house SOTHEBY'S estimated the three-day sale would raise about $1.5 million, but the final takings will vastly exceed that.
Proceeds from the sale will go to Cash's estate.15/09/2004 17:14
