The actor, who is playing lawyer Robert Shapiro in the FX series American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson, appears on The Ellen Degeneres Show airing on Tuesday (05Apr16).

When the chat show host asked if his daughter Ella, 16, was dating, the father-of-three coyly answered that he steered well clear of dating talk, and in fact preferred it if his daughter didn't go out at all.

"No, no, no. I don't interfere with that," John, 62, quickly answers, shooting a glance at Ella seated in the audience with her mother Kelly Preston, 53.

"I'm saving her because she has two guys that she hangs out with. I don't ask anything about what they say or do with each other."

Kelly, who also has son Benjamin and late son Jett with John, however said she does asks questions and added: "I know everything."

Both Ella and Kelly then confirmed the teen wasn't dating, to which the protective father added: "Let's keep it that way. I never want my children to leave the house, ever."

Ellen, 58, praised John for his scene-stealing portrayal of Shapiro in the hit television show that has America gripped.

John said it took two months for him to decide to take the role and four months to lock it down.

"They even allowed me to be a producer to assure the quality of it, if I was worried about this being a guilty pleasure or something," he told Ellen.

"And then I finally just said yes and I was so confident that we would do something that was bigger than the obvious," he added.

The FX series airs its season finale in the U.S. on Tuesday (5Apr16) in an episode titled The Verdict.
