John Lennon's widow Yoko Ono has been named the first Global Autism Ambassador of the charity Autism Speaks.
The artist and singer first teamed up with the foundation to create Promises, a seven-foot (two metre) mural to mark World Autism Awareness Day last year (Apr09) - and now she's agreed to serve as ambassador for Autism Speaks.
Ono accepted the honour at a reception held in New York on Wednesday (31Mar10), where she told the crowd: "As an artist the concept of distance means nothing to me. You can bring the whole world together with a song, a painting or a single word and that is what I have tried to achieve with Promise and I hope it has been able to make a difference."
The 77 year old's artwork was auctioned off last year to benefit the organisation.
