Iconic photos taken of John Lennon on what would be the last day of his life have topped a new list of the best magazine covers of all time.

Lennon posed for photographs with Yoko Ono as part of a session with famed photographer Annie Liebovitz.

One of the pictures, featuring a naked Lennon curled around and kissing a clothed Ono, became the cover for Rolling Stone magazine's tribute to him.

That image, which was published shortly after his death in December 1980, has been ranked the top magazine cover of the last 40 years by a panel of magazine editors, artists and designers.

It beat Demi Moore's pregnant pose on the cover of Vanity Fair in August 1991.

Others on the list include images from the 9/11 terrorist attacks, an August 1968 Glamour cover featuring KATITI KIRONDE II - the first black woman on the cover of a US women's magazine, and Life magazine's image of Neil Armstrong on the moon in 1969.
