John Lennon's original handwritten lyrics to THE Beatles' classic A DAY IN THE LIFE have failed to sell at auction, after going on sale with a starting price of $1 million (GBP572,000). Lennon was inspired to write the single sheet of lyrics after reading the 17 January 1967 edition of British newspaper the Daily Mail. Also included is the first two complete drafts of Lennon's ideas for the song, which was co-written with Sir Paul McCartney. The item had been expected to fetch in the region of $2.6 million (GBP1.5 million) but the reserve was not met. A spokesman for the auctioneer says, "It's a reality in our business but we're certainly disappointed. "We wish we were jumping on the rooftops yelling about the sales prices."
