Liverpool City Council bosses have been forced to spend a small fortune on a cover-up after vandals defaced a portrait of native legend John Lennon.

The pranksters apparently climbed the scaffolding behind the St George's Hall in Lennon's home town of Liverpool and subsequently cut out a circle from the left lens of Lennon's spectacles.

A swift repair job, which included 30 gallons of ink and 150 hours to print, was completed on Thursday (26JUN03).

The picture in question depicts Lennon as "the Mona Lisa with a guitar." Liverpool City Council chiefs are currently investigating the attack.
