Lennon was shot outside the city's Dakota Building, where he lived, on 8 December, 1980, by Mark David Chapman.

Devotees from around the world performed Lennon's songs and observed moments of silence to commemorate the tragic anniversary.

Chapman was arrested at the crime scene and later pleaded guilty to Lennon's murder. He was sentenced to 20 years to life behind bars. Chapman was imprisoned in 1981 and has been denied parole eight times.
