British actor and author John Clive has died at the age of 79.

The London-born star passed away on Sunday (14Oct12) after a short illness.

Clive's career began in the 1960s, and he appeared in several films and TV shows before voicing the part of John Lennon in 1968's Yellow Submarine.

A year later (69), he appeared with Michael Caine in The Italian Job, in an iconic scene improvised by the pair.

He went on to star in A Clockwork Orange, as well as four Carry On films and two Pink Panther movies.

In later life, Clive became a best-selling author of historical and social fiction.

He is survived by two children from his first marriage, and his second wife, Bryony.
