Drama Manchester by the Sea leads the AACTA pack with six nods, while the movie musical lands five. Both movies are up for Best Film, alongside Lion, Hacksaw Ridge, and Arrival.

Mel Gibson, whose movie Hacksaw Ridge picked up nine awards at the AACTA Awards in Sydney last week (09Dec16), is up for Best Direction, while fellow Aussies Joel Edgerton (Loving), Nicole Kidman (Lion), and Teresa Palmer (Hacksaw Ridge) have received International AACTA Award nominations for Best Lead Actor and Best Supporting Actress, respectively.

Gibson will compete against Denis Villeneuve (Arrival), Damien Chazelle (La La Land), Garth Davis (Lion), and Kenneth Lonergan (Manchester by the Sea), while Egerton will battle for Best Lead Actor with Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea), Andrew Garfield (Hacksaw Ridge), Ryan Gosling (La La Land) and Denzel Washington (Fences).

The AACTA International Award for Best Lead Actress will be a fight between Amy Adams (Arrival), Isabel Huppert (Elle), Ruth Negga (Loving), Natalie Portman (Jackie), and Emma Stone (La La Land), while Viola Davis (Fences), Naomie Harris (Moonlight), and Michelle Williams (Manchester by the Sea) will tackle Kidman and Palmer for the Supporting Actress prize.

Mahershala Ali (Moonlight), Jeff Bridges (Hell or High Water), Lucas Hedges (Manchester by the Sea), Dev Patel (Lion), and Michael Shannon (Nocturnal Animals) will compete for the International Award for Best Supporting Actor.

The winners of the sixth AACTA International Awards will be announced in Los Angeles on 6 January (17).
